What types of waste are included in organic waste?

Organic waste refers to biodegradable materials that can naturally decompose. This type of waste generally includes items derived from living organisms, which typically break down through natural processes involving microorganisms. Food scraps and garden waste fall squarely into this category because they are composed of materials that can decompose over time, returning nutrients to the soil and supporting the natural cycle of life.

For instance, food scraps from the kitchen—such as vegetable peels, fruit cores, and leftover food—are rich in organic matter that can be composted. Similarly, garden waste, including grass clippings, leaves, and branches, also breaks down naturally and can be reused as compost in gardens and landscaping.

In contrast, other types of waste, such as plastic and aluminum, medical waste and chemicals, or glass and metals, do not decompose biologically in a natural setting and thus are classified differently.
